NEW ORLEANS (AP) _ About 200 customers were still without power in parts of downtown New Orleans Tuesday more than 24 hours after an outage that started when an animal came into contact with power equipment.
Lee Sabatini, a spokesperson for local utility Entergy New Orleans, said that around 9 a.m. Monday an animal came into contact with equipment at one of the utility's substations, and caused ``significant damage that requires extended repairs.``
The customers still without power as of midday Tuesday were primarily commercial buildings in the city's downtown area, Sabatini said. At the peak of the outage, about 8,500 customers were without power. The outage was expected to last until about 4 p.m. Tuesday.
The utility installed some portable generators while working to restore power, Sabatini said.
